NOVAkILL's software applications are almost all PC-only. Running contrary
to conventional wisdom again, they rely 100% on their PC to perform
flawlessly on stage and have never been let down. Working with PCs
means you can do everything so much less expensively and you get a
much wider choice of software to work with. NOVAkILL's entire software
set-up has cost somewhere between US$300 and US$400, yet it can
compete with any big studio for quality, power and flexibility.
ORION 8 is the centrepiece of NOVAkILL’s workflow. It is a fully featured
virtual studio application that does most of what is needed. You can find
some alternative skins on the EXTRAS page.
It is supplemented by SoundForge 9.0, which is a very competent, full-
featured audio editing application. NOVAkILL use it to prepare samples
for Orion and for mastering tracks.
SynthEdit is used to create all the VST plugins NOVAkILL make.
NOVAkILL's studio, Zone-V, is state-of-the-art simplicity. Between them, Bones & Sik have more than 40
years experience writing, producing and performing electronic music and their choices here, whilst possibly
seeming at odds with accepted wisdom, reflect that experience. Keeping the process as simple as possible
is the only way to ensure that production remains manageable.
Many people think you need to spend a lot of money to be able to produce professional quality results, but
all the gear in this section, excluding the laptop, was purchased new for around US$1500 total, and
NOVAkILL's entire software suite can be purchased for well under US$400. So for less than two grand over
the cost of a decent PC, NOVAkILL can do higher quality work than was possible 10 years ago for 10 times
the cost. More importantly, it allows them the freedom to do it all at home, in their own time, rather than
having to hire a studio and rush to get it all done.
