  000STUDIO HARDWARE
NOVAkILL's studio, Zone-V, is state-of-the-art simplicity. Between them, Bones & Sik have more than 40 years experience writing, producing and performing electronic music and their choices here, whilst possibly seeming at odds with accepted wisdom, reflect that experience. Keeping the process as simple as possible is the only way to ensure that production remains manageable. All the major studio components - computer, stereo monitors and audio I/O device - were purchased new in 2007, resulting in a significant increase in capacity for the studio. Many people think you need to spend a lot of money to be able to produce professional quality results, but all the gear in this section, excluding the laptop, was purchased new for around US$1500 total and NOVAkILL's entire software suite can be purchased for well under US$400. So for less than two grand over the cost of a decent PC, NOVAkILL can do higher quality work than was possible 10 years ago for 10 times the cost. More importantly, it allows them the freedom to do it all at home, in their own time, rather than having to hire a studio and rush to get it all done.

  000EXTRA HARDWARE for STAGE
NOVAkILL have always seen themselves as a live band first and foremost, so all the appropriate studio gear also travels with them on tour. This means it has to be lightweight and rugged and again, simplicity is key. The fewer points of failure you have, the less likely that anything will go wrong. Most of the live mix is done on stage, to ensure a consistency of sound, and unlike many other electronic acts, all sound is generated live from their PC. NOVAkILL have never used any form of pre-recorded backing for live shows which means that everything has to perform to expectations, every time. Some of this gear was purchased second-hand [SPD20 & Prophecy] and the other components were all well under US$100 each.

  000SOFTWARE
NOVAkILL's software applications are almost all PC-only. Running contrary to conventional wisdom again, they rely 100% on their PC to perform flawlessly on stage and have never been let down. Working with PCs means you can do everything so much less expensively and you get a much wider choice of software to work with. NOVAkILL's entire software set-up has cost somewhere between US$300 and US$400, yet it can compete with any set-up in any big studio for quality, power and flexibility.
  00ORION Platinum Virtual Studio 00SoundForge 9.0
ORION is far and away the most intuitive music application around. It works in the same way that most musicians would work with their own hardware gear or in a studio. It had a zero learning curve for NOVAkILL, yet it continues to provide them with the ability to do anything they desire at the highest quality. Without ORION, it is very likely NOVAkILL would still be a hardware-based band. You can find various resources for ORION in the FREESOURCES area of this site.

NOVAkILL have finally replaced Cool Edit 2000 with SoundForge for their audio editing needs, as CE2k will not run reliably under Windows Vista. SF9 is a lot easier to work with than earlier versions and has a lot of handy tools. It is also a lot faster at processing, even if it's UI and workflow are not quite as good as CE2k.

00SynthEdit Modular System 00VST Plugins Instruments and Effects
SE is used to create all the killer line of VST instrument and effect plugins. There is a huge selection of 3rd party modules to supplement the components that come standard, allowing anyone with a little patience to make seriously useful tools for themselves, or to share with anyone else who has a VST-compatible host application.   Today, NOVAkILL rely mostly on ORION's built-in instruments, augmented by their own SE creations. However, over the years they have consistently used PSP MixSaturator [effect], JX Synth [free], Synth1 [free], Scorpion and PlastiCZ!. It is hard to justify the expense of almost any plugin these days, when ORION provides such amazing quality and value.
